515.00.02 - Special Offers & Price Cuts
The Valis Group is offering the Valis Materia Prima tileable textures CD-ROM
for $100, as well as Pixar's Showplace for $80, to Pixel Solo customers.
Summagraphics Corp. has new lowered prices on its SummaJet 2 series
monochrome and color ink jet plotters. Prices are now $2,899 for E-size
monochrome, $2,599 for D-size color, and $3,199 for E-size color.
515.00.03 - Upgrades
TESS reporter Rob Glidden says Caligari started shipping trueSpace 2.0 to
upgrade orders today, Monday 6/5/95, and plans to begin sending out new
orders on 6/7.
RenderStar Technology BV is shipping a minor maintenance upgrade (1.07) to
RenderStar 4 for use in AutoCAD. Primarily to make RenderStar 4 consistent
with the new changes in AutoCAD r13, this upgrade also automatically loads
RenderStar 4 when a RenderStar 4 command is entered.
RenderStar just moved. Besides a new mailing address (see 515.05 below),
they also have a new "visiting" address at Keizersgracht 113-115 in
Amsterdam. Phones remain the same.
The Valis Group just announced version 1.5 of PixelPutty Solo ($399), its
freeform spline-based graphics and animation program. The new version also
runs on PowerMacs, has inverse kinematics, path animations, welding of
patches, a numeric controls dialog, and the ability to force objects to
always face other objects. Export formats include RIB, DXF, and 3DGF.
515.01 - News Wrap
Although you may have seen advertising for 3D Construction Co.'s 3D Builder,
the first news release announcing the $595 product arrived 6/2/95. The
software, which is expected to ship at Siggraph in August, helps you to
build 3D models from photos and will run under Windows 3.1, 95, and NT.
Image import formats are reported to include PhotoCD, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, IFF,
Sun Raster, and BMP. You can work with one, two, or multiple images, and
model to wireframe or polygonal mesh. Camera modifications are not required.
Exports can be made to DXF, IGES, and SGI Inventor formats.
Fractal Design is shipping Poser ($199) for modeling the human body in 3D.
Poser allow you to work with male and female models in body sizes from
infant to super hero. Individual body parts can be altered in size and
dimension. You can apply surfaces, bump maps, lighting, and cameras, then
render within Poser. Poser also takes advantage of inverse kinematics for
easier mannequin positioning.
Poser is currently available only for the Mac but a Windows version is to
follow. Poser uses an interface similar to Fractal Design Painter, which
should make it familiar to Painter and Dabbler users. Export is to RIB, DXF,
or PICT formats.
Visual Circuits has announced their MVP MPEG Video Producer ($695) for
Windows. It compresses and plays back at 30 fps full-screen animations and
CD-quality sound (WAV format). Visual Circuits says you can get an hour of
full-motion video and audio to fit into 500Mb. This system comes on an ISA
card, supports NTSC or PAL video output, and reportedly features CD-quality
sound, Video CD compatibility, Windows MCI and DOS OM1 drivers. An optional
feature allows you to write to a CD-ROM writer.
Also announced is an IBM Microchannel bus MPEG playback controller card
called the Reeltime MC ($495) that will allow you to play back full-screen
video at 30fps with CD quality sound on 386-or-greater platforms. You can
also get accelerated graphics by adding the Reeltime SVGA companion card to
the Reeltime MC. Both for $695.
Tech-M Pop-In Parts are clip art for technical illustrations of hardware and
mechanical components. Available formats include Mac EPS and PC WMF and CGM.
Sets range from $29 to $99 each.
515.02 - User Group Update
Here are a number of new groups and changed listings for desktop 3D user groups.
Florida: South Fla. Electric Image Users Group, c/o Lloyd Alvarez, 200 E.
Broward Blvd. #1330, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301; 305/847-3800; lloyd@cci.gate.net
Florida: Tampa Bay ACM Siggraph Professional Chapter, P.O. Box 20782, Tampa,
FL 34622; 813/977-8414; tampabay_chapter@siggraph.org
Oregon: Portland Area 3D Studio User Group, c/o Tim Branan, Atterbury
Consultants, 3800 Cedar Hills Blvd. #280, Beaverton, OR 97005; 503/646-5393
(wk) 644-5619 (hm). Meets monthly.
Australia: 3D user group in formation c/o John Morris, 12 Rimmer St.,
Mentone, Vict. 3194; morris@melbpc.org.au. According to a 6/1/95 message,
"So far we have about 30 members. We all have a vested interest in 3D
Studio, but we also all use other software packages."
We won't be listing every ACM Siggraph chapter, but we're open to listing
those that focus especially on the needs of desktop 3D graphics users. That
fits the Tampa Bay and San Francisco chapters, but leaves out others such as
the one here in New Mexico. (NM Siggraph, however, helps sponsor two groups
that we do list.)
There are also a number of changes posted today 6/5/95 in the
/3dartist/dt3dsigs.txt file on our Internet ftp site: ftp.3dartist.com,
which is one click away from our home page at http://www.3dartist.com/:
> California: San Francisco ACM Siggraph chapter added (see TESS#512.00.04)
> Georgia: new phone for Savannah Area 3D Multimedia Users Group
> Michigan: AeroData Computer Svcs., sponsor for the Mich. Graphics,
Multimedia & Animation User's Group, has moved to Farmington Hills

made our inaugural home page more useful and attractive for only a little
work. It's a beginning effort to mark our spot on the infobahn, but it gives
direct accesss to our ftp site with TESS back issues and other resources.
There also is basic information about 3D ARTIST magazine, including the
cover image which will help you find us on newsstands!--B.A.
